The New Shape of the Internet
Currently there are fewer than 300 top-level domains: the familiar generic (gTLD) categories such as .com, .info, .org and .biz represent roughly 22 TLDs, plus there
This shift has the potential to fundamentally change the way business is conducted on the Internet.

There are close to 250 country-code TLDs (ccTLDs) such as .jp and .fr. Under the new
plan, any established entity may apply for TLDs representing nearly any industry
or area of interest such as .car, .sports or .bank. Individual corporations may also
apply for branded TLDs such as .ford, .wsj, and .airbus.
Successful applicants will be able to secure their own “islands” on the Internet.
However, they will also need to assume all of the responsibilities associated with
operating a domain name registry, a complex and expensive undertaking.
ICANN’s initiative would open the door for hundreds, if not thousands, of new
top-level domains and will profoundly transform the Internet’s hierarchy from its
current vertical alignment into a much more horizontal structure.
Here are some of the issues this Free ICANN Reportlooks at:

  1. Business Opportunities – Opening up a Top Level Domain Island is an option as a business because such an entity must be maintained. While many companies and even individuals would like such a property, the maintenance labor and cost is prohibitive. Any company which can streamline this will find its services in high demand.
  2. Marketing Opportunities – If you take on the challenge and cost of manageing the .car top level domain, it is unlikely that you’ll not benefit from this. Creating a domain island out of a single, product heavy domain is very likely to have huge commercial implications in the future.
  3. Risks, such as brand abuse – Unfortunately, opting out of becoming part of this top level domain change may leave you at the mercy of less scrupulous you would like to trade on your name and profit by association. Worse still, their activities may run counter to your image.
  4. Costs – As stated before managing a top level domain has its associated costs. This report outlines the expenses you’ll have to consider.

Deciding not to make a decision on this is really not an option. At the very least, you need to be aware of this coming change and develop a strategy for managing your brand in this new environment where your name can conceivably, and legally crop up in places that you do not intend.
